An overstatement is a claim that makes something sound more important, more serious, or bigger than it really is. It is the noun that sits next to the verb . "That's an overstatement" is a polite way to say "you're going too far" or "it isn't quite that true." "It is no overstatement to say…" means the strong claim really is fair. The word has the same careful, slightly formal feel as ; you meet it in essays, news, and arguments more than in the playground. One overstatement is one claim.
