Overmuch means too much — more than is good, more than you need, more than is wise. It can sit in front of a noun (overmuch praise, overmuch wine) or after a verb (do not worry overmuch). Though actually, this is an old, word. You will meet it in hymns, sermons, and older novels; almost nobody says it in the street now. We just say too much. It is not a cheerful “very”: it almost always carries a little finger-wag, as if the speaker thinks the amount has gone past what is right. You can use it as an adjective (overmuch talking) or as an adverb (he talks overmuch); the feeling is the same.

組成over- (too much / above) + much. From Middle English overmuche, from Old English ofermicel. Same idea as the rarer old form overmickle.
