Going across land, instead of by ship or by plane. It works two ways. As an adjective it sits in front of a noun: an overland route, an overland journey, the overland trail. As an adverb it comes after the verb: they travelled overland, we went overland from Bangkok to Singapore. The word carries a feeling with it. Nobody says "overland" about a ten-minute taxi ride. It shows up when the land part is the hard part, the slow part, the part worth telling people about — long distances, several countries, maybe rough roads. Old newspapers used it for mail and armies; today you meet it most in travel writing and in the names of adventure tour companies. There is a small thing worth noticing: the word only makes sense when sea or air was the other choice. If there is no ocean to cross and no flight to take, we just say "by road" or "by train". So "overland" quietly tells you what the did NOT do.
