In a forest, overgrowth is the plants and branches that hang above your head — the green you walk under, not the bushes by your feet. dictionaries set it next to undergrowth, which is the low stuff. So over- here is “up above.” You cut a path through overgrowth when vines and high branches close over the trail. Though actually, in a lot of other English the same spelling means “growing too much”: an overgrowth of weeds in a garden, or cells growing more than they should. Both are real. In a forest story, picture the branches over you. In a garden or a clinic, picture too much growth. The forest sense is the one this entry is for.
