Overfishing is taking so many fish from the sea, a river, or a lake that the number of fish left becomes too low — and often cannot grow back quickly. It is usually a noun for the whole process and the problem, the word you see in news and science class. People also use the verb: they overfished that area. Though actually, it is not only “too many fish on the boat.” If boats always take the big ones, the group can still fall apart; other animals that eat those fish go hungry too. The word is serious and a bit formal. Some fishing people use it as a charge against huge company boats; nature groups use it as a warning. It is not “fishing over a place,” like above a bridge.
