To overeat is to eat too much — more than your body needs, or more than is healthy. You can do it once, at a wedding or a hot-pot dinner, and feel heavy and sorry afterwards; you can also overeat as a habit, a little extra every day, until it starts to hurt you. People use it about themselves a lot: “I overate.” It is everyday English, a bit softer than doctor-talk about bingeing, though some speakers stretch it that way. Though actually, the grammar keeps the old pattern of eat: today I overeat, yesterday I overate, I have overeaten. And you overeat with no object — in careful English you do not “overeat a pizza”; you eat too much pizza, or you overeat at lunch.
