An overbearing person does not just like to lead. They press in on other people: they decide, they talk over you, they do not really leave room for your wishes or feelings. It is stronger and colder than , which can still sound a bit small or childish. Overbearing is the parent who will not hear “no”, the manager who treats the room as theirs alone. It is common in speech and in writing; it is not slang, and it is not kind. People are overbearing; plans and rules can feel overbearing too, when they sit too heavily on you. Though actually, it does not mean “carrying too much”, even though bear can mean “carry”. And it is not about your bearing — how you stand or how you hold yourself. It is the -ing form of a rare verb, , “to bear down”, frozen as a describing word.
