An outpost is a small group of buildings far from cities or from the main camp — usually army, sometimes trade, sometimes a company office in a far place. The army sense is the oldest feeling: a post “out” on the edge, watching, holding a little piece of ground. Empires, explorers, and mining companies left outposts. Today a newspaper might call a tiny foreign office an outpost of the main company, which is a stretch but a common one: not soldiers, just a few people a long way from head office. It always carries a whiff of “far from the centre, a bit alone.” It is not the word for a suburb of ; those are still in the city’s orbit. The post here is a station — a place you are posted — not the mail.
組成out- (far out; away from the centre) + post (a station; a place someone is posted). From out- + post. Same old English out- as the others, here meaning “out on the edge.”
