Outplacement is a service a company provides to help its workers find new jobs when it cannot keep employing them. It is a workplace word, born in human-resources offices, and it is a little soft around the edges: the company is still ending the job; outplacement is the help that comes with the goodbye — how to write a CV, how to sit an interview, sometimes a desk and a phone for a few weeks. You will not hear this from children or in a night market. You will hear it from HR, from newspapers writing about layoffs, and from the firms that sell the service. Though actually, the workers themselves often just say they got help finding a new job; “outplacement” is the company’s name for it. The out- here is “out of this workplace,” not “better than.”
