A smaller building that stands apart from the main house but belongs with it — a barn, a shed, a garage, a stable, an old workshop at the end of the garden. Two things make it an outbuilding: it is separate (not joined to the house) and it is secondary (the house is the real building). It is a countable noun, and it usually turns up in the plural, because places that have one tend to have several: 'the farmhouse and its outbuildings'. You will meet it in property advertisements, in news reports about farms and police searches, and in writing about the countryside. It leans slightly formal and rural; in everyday Taiwanese-student English you would more likely just say 'a shed' or 'a garage'. It says nothing about what the building is used for — an outbuilding can hold animals, tools, a car, or nothing at all.
