An oubliette is a cruel little prison room in an old castle. It is often under the floor, with the only way in a hole in the ceiling: guards dropped a person in and, in a manner of speaking, left them there. That is the point of the name. It was borrowed from French oubliette, from oublier, to forget — a room for someone you mean to forget. You meet it in history and in stories about castles, not in daily talk. It is narrower than dungeon: a dungeon is any castle prison; an oubliette is the “forget-you” kind, usually entered from above. Say it roughly oo-blee-ET.
