An ottoman is a low, soft piece of furniture — like a large box with a cushion on top. You sit on it, or more often you rest your feet on it while you sit in a chair. Many have a lid, so you can hide blankets or toys inside. The name comes from Ottoman, the old European word for the Turkish empire: in the early 1800s, people in Europe linked this kind of low couch with Middle Eastern rooms, where reclining on a couch was part of the picture. It is an ordinary home word, not fancy. Spell it with a small o when you mean the seat.

組成From Ottoman in the early 19th century; so named because reclining on a couch was associated with Middle Eastern customs. Ottoman itself was borrowed from Middle French Ottoman, from Italian Ottomano, from Arabic عُثْمَان (ʕuṯmān).
