A very large African bird that cannot fly but can run extremely fast. It has a long neck, long legs, and lays the largest eggs of any bird. It's also part of a common saying — someone who "buries their head in the sand like an ostrich" is ignoring a problem and pretending it doesn't exist, based on an old () belief that ostriches hide their heads in the sand when scared.
