In the United States, the OSS was a government department set up in 1942, during the Second World War, to collect information about other countries — especially in secret. The letters stand for Office of Strategic Services. It ran spies, supported resistance groups, and did research. In 1947 it was closed; the CIA took over much of that work, and people often say the OSS was the CIA’s parent. You meet the name in history books and war films, not in today’s news as a living office. Say the letters: O-S-S. It is easy to brush against OSHA on the page (another US government set of letters), but that one is workplace safety, and this one was wartime intelligence.
