A city in the southeast of Norway: the capital, the biggest city, and the main port. The government sits there; ships come in there. People say OZ-lo. The name is very old, from Old Norse Ósló or Ásló. The second part is “meadow.” The first part is disputed: it most likely comes from áss, a god, one of the Æsir — so the name is probably something like “the gods’ meadow.” Another idea, that it comes from a word for “hill,” is unlikely. Nobody thinks about gods when they say Oslo today; it is just the city’s name. Do not mix it up with Stockholm, which is Sweden.
