In ancient Egyptian mythology, Osiris is the god of the dead — and, though actually, also of new life after death, because the Egyptians tied him to grain that grows again and to the Nile that floods and then falls. He was the husband of Isis, and also her ; in those old god-stories the royal family marries inside itself, which students at first. His Set killed him and cut him up; Isis put him back together; he then ruled the world of the dead and judged people after they died. The name belongs in museums, history class, and stories. It is a proper name, not a job word you can use for any “god of the dead.” People say o-SY-ris.
