A willow whose long, thin, bendy branches are cut for making baskets, fences, and woven furniture. People also call those branches osiers (or withies): you soak them so they stay flexible, then weave. It is an old country-and-craft word. and basket-makers still use it; in the city you are more likely to hear just “willow.” Though actually, not every willow is an osier — the name points at the kinds grown for their shoots, not at a big shade tree by a river. You will meet it in older books, craft shops, and plant lists more than in everyday talk.
