    An Oscar is the golden prize given each year in the United States for the best work in film — best picture, best actor, best actress, and many jobs behind the camera. The official name is Academy Award; Oscar is the nickname everyone actually uses. People say “She won an Oscar,” and “the Oscars” for the night of the show. Though actually, nobody is sure why the statue got that nickname — there are a few stories, and they do not all agree, so it is honest to say we do not know for certain. Oscar is also a much older personal name. That name is a mix of two different old names: an Irish Oscar (often explained as “deer” + “friend”) and an Old English name meaning “god’s spear.” Napoleon later helped the given name spread in Europe. When film people say “an Oscar,” they mean the award, not a man called Oscar.

組成As a film prize: a nickname for the Academy Award; why the statue was called Oscar is not certain. As a given name (the source of that nickname): partly Irish Oscar, from os (“deer”) + cara (“friend”), and partly Old English Ōscār / Ōsgār (“god’s spear”), from ōs (“god”) + gār (“spear”).
