    An orphan is a child whose parents have both died. As a verb, "to orphan" someone means to make them lose their parents that way — often used in the passive, like "she was orphaned at age five." People also stretch the word a little to talk about things left without the support they need, like "an orphan drug" (a medicine for a rare disease that doesn't get much funding because few people need it).
