Ormolu is a gold-coloured metal used to furniture, clocks, and frames, especially fancy French work from a few hundred years ago. A tidy dictionary will say it is a mix of metals that only looks like gold and contains no real gold — and that is true of a lot of later, cheaper copies. Though actually, the old French craft was messier: makers often took bronze and put a very thin layer of real gold on it, with a mercury method that is mostly banned now. So in a museum, “ormolu mounts” may mean that gilded bronze, not a gold-free mix. The word is from French or moulu, “ground gold.” You will meet it in antique notes more than in everyday talk.
