Orlando is a city in the middle of Florida, in the United States. Huge numbers of tourists go there, mainly for Walt Disney World and Epcot, and also for other big parks nearby. The city itself is a real place with homes, roads, and a lot of heat; the parks sit around it, not instead of it. Though actually, Disney's older American park, Disneyland, is in California, not here. Disney World is the Florida one, and that is why so many families fly into Orlando. The city has used this name since 1857. Before that, from 1844, the settlement was called Jernigan. The name Orlando is the Italian form of Roland, the old European hero's name. A common story is that it honours a soldier, Orlando Reeves, killed there in 1835 — perhaps, which is as much as we can honestly say.
