Orkney is a group of islands off the north coast of Scotland, just south of the Shetland Islands. People also say the Orkney Islands. The sea around them is cold and busy. Farming and fishing have long been the main work, and the islands are also a base for North Sea oil. The land is mostly low and open, with old stone, a lot of wind, and a lot of sky. Though actually, the modern English name looks like one place — Orkney — even though it is many islands; that is how English settled after the old Norse name, which was plural. Write it with a capital O. People who live there are called Orcadians. You say in Orkney, not an Orkney, for the place.
組成From Old Norse Orkneyjar, seal islands: ørkn (seal) + ey (island). The old Norse name was plural; the modern English form is singular. Ninth-century Norwegian settlers reshaped an older name for the islands, recorded in Ancient Greek as Órkádes, which came from a Celtic word for a young pig. Less likely guesses link it to Welsh erch (speckled) or a Celtic word for pine — and these islands are known for having almost no trees.
