In old Greek stories, Orestes is the son of Agamemnon, king of , and . While he is still a child, his mother and her lover Aegisthus kill Agamemnon when the king comes home from war. Relatives hide Orestes so he is not killed too. When he is grown, he comes back and kills Aegisthus and his own mother. The old plays do not treat this as a simple win: a son was expected to pay his father back, but to kill your mother is, in those stories, a stain that will not wash off. Spirits of revenge hunt him afterwards, and in one famous set of plays a court in Athens has to judge him. You meet the name in talk about Greek tragedy, not in the street. It is a person's name, not an everyday noun you put a or an in front of.
