An Oreo is a popular American cookie: two dark chocolate with a sweet white cream in the middle. People twist them, dunk them in milk, and eat the cream first. The name is a brand, from 1912, and nobody is sure where the word first came from; the stories you hear are guesses. In many places people now say Oreo for that whole kind of cookie, even when the packet has another name. Though actually, in American English the word has also been used as a cruel name for a Black person who is said to be “black on the outside, white on the inside,” like the cookie. That use is an insult.
