Oregano is a small plant with strong-smelling leaves. Cooks dry the leaves and put them on pizza, tomato sauce, and other food, especially Italian food. The taste is warm and a little sharp. In English it is an everyday kitchen word. Though actually, what shops sell as oregano is not always exactly the same plant — Mexican cooking often uses a related plant with a stronger taste, and people still call it oregano. In Taiwan you will see the dried leaves in a little jar.
