An orangutang is a large ape with very long arms and long orange-brown hair. It lives in the forests of islands in South-East Asia and spends much of its time in the trees. It is not a monkey (it has no tail); it is one of the great apes, like the gorilla. You will also see the spelling orangutan, which is very common now. The English name is not from the colour orange, even though the hair looks that way — though actually, that is exactly the trick your eyes will play on you.
