An Orangeman is a member of the Orange Order, a Protestant group strongest in Northern Ireland. Orangemen want Northern Ireland to stay in the United Kingdom. They stand against groups, often Catholic, who want it to become part of Ireland. They are well known for parades: they march through the streets with banners and drums, playing old Protestant tunes. “Protestant” here means Christians who are not Catholic, in this Irish story. The Orange in the name is not the fruit. It comes from William of Orange, a Protestant king. This is a living political word; people on different sides feel very differently about those marches.
