An oppressor is the person, group, or government that treats people in a cruel or unfair way and keeps their rights from them. The word points a finger. It names who is sitting on whom. In history class it is often a ruler, an army, or a class with power. People who are hurting, or people writing about justice, use it; people in power almost never call themselves oppressors. The ending -or means “the one who does it,” the same idea as in actor.
