An opencast mine is one where coal is taken out of wide holes in the ground near the surface, not from deep tunnels under the earth. The work happens in the open air; machines the ground rather than sending people far below. This is mainly British English. In American English the usual words are open-pit mine or strip mine. Though actually, other rock and metal can be taken this way too, but books often show it with coal. It can describe the mine or the method (opencast mining). A news and geography word, not everyday chat unless you live near a mine.
