Open-toed shoes do not cover the ends of your toes — you can see them, and air can reach them. Many sandals are open-toed; some smarter women’s shoes show only a little of the toes. You use the word about the shoes, not about the feet themselves. Though actually, it is not the same as wearing no shoes, and we usually just say flip-flops for that kind of sandal, even though they are open-toed too. The opposite is closed-toe or closed-toed shoes. In summer, shops and dress codes talk about this a lot (“no open-toed shoes in the lab”).
