An open-plan office, school, or home is built as one big space, without walls dividing it into separate rooms. Desks or sofas share the same air, and you can often see right across the floor. Companies like it because people can talk easily and it looks modern. Though actually, many workers find it noisy, and they have no door to close. In flats, an open-plan kitchen and living room means cooking and sitting happen in one space. Ordinary in building and office talk. British English uses the adjective a lot; Americans say it too, or simply “an open office.”
open-plan 用來形容辦公室、學校或住家，整個空間連成一片，沒有牆把它隔成各個房間。桌子或沙發都在同一片空間裡，你常常一眼就能看到整層地板。公司喜歡這種設計，因為大家容易交談，看起來也很現代；不過很多員工覺得它吵，而且沒有門可以關。
在住家裡，「an open-plan kitchen」就是廚房和客廳連在一起，煮飯和坐下來休息都在同一個空間。英式英文常用帶連字號的形容詞，美式也會用，但也常直接說「an open office」，常見於建築和辦公室的說法。
