An open-plan office, school, or home is built as one big space, without walls dividing it into separate rooms. Desks or sofas share the same air, and you can often see right across the floor. Companies like it because people can talk easily and it looks modern. Though actually, many workers find it noisy, and they have no door to close. In flats, an open-plan kitchen and living room means cooking and sitting happen in one space. Ordinary in building and office talk. British English uses the hyphenated adjective a lot; Americans say it too, or simply “an open office.”
