    An opal is a stone people put in rings and . In the simple picture it looks milky white, but when you turn it, little of green, blue, pink, or orange slide around inside. That changing colour is why people love it. Though actually, not every famous opal is white: Australia is known for dark ones with a bright flash, and they are still opals. It is a rather soft stone next to diamond, so a ring can scratch if you knock it about. The name is old. It came through French opale and Latin opalus, from Greek, and before that from a word for a gem or stone. Far, far back, scholars tie that old word to an “upper” millstone — the stone that sits on top — and so, , to English over. You do not need that in a jewellery shop; it is just the long story of the name.
