Oops is what you say when something small goes wrong — you drop a cup, you say the wrong name, you bump someone. It is friendly. It tells the other person I know, and I am not making a big drama of it. You will also hear whoops, and the longer, slightly oops-a-daisy when a child falls. People have written oops since the 1920s. It is very informal; you would not write it in a report, but you would say it all day. Though actually, if the mistake is serious, oops can sound too light, as if you do not care. Save it for small things.

組成A natural sound-word, written from 1921. Related to whoops. A shortening of whoops-a-daisy / oops-a-daisy, which comes from a muddled saying of upsy-daisy.
