Ontological is the adjective for ideas about what it means for something to be real — to exist at all. Philosophers ask ontological questions: What kinds of things are there? Is a number as real as a chair? Is there a God? The famous ontological argument tries to prove God exists from the idea of God alone; you do not need to agree with it to recognise the word. It is a university word, not a street word. In everyday English you almost never need it; in a philosophy class you cannot avoid it. Computer people sometimes borrow it too, when they talk about how a system names the kinds of things in its world. That is a specialist stretch of the same idea. It does not mean Canadian, and it is not about insects.
