An onrush is a strong, fast movement forward — water down a hill, a crowd pushing into a street, wind, soldiers. It can also be the sudden coming of something that is not a body at all: an onrush of fear, of winter, of new ideas. It is mostly a noun, and it sounds a little literary. News and stories like it. In everyday talk people more often say rush, wave, or flood. There is a verb to onrush, "to rush ," but you will rarely hear it; people just say rush. Though actually, the "sudden development" sense is a stretch of the same picture: something does not walk in slowly; it comes at you. That is why feelings and seasons can have an onrush too, not only water and crowds.
