In boxing, a one-two is two hits in a row: first one hand, then the other, very quick. The trainer counts it — one, two — and that count became the name. The one is usually the front hand, a short straight hit; the two comes right behind it with the other hand. Together they are one move, not two separate fights. People also say a one-two punch, and then they borrow the picture: two problems, two bits of news, two blows that land one after the other. Though actually, footballers say one-two too, and they do not mean hitting. They mean a short pass to a teammate who passes straight back. Same words, different sport. Here we are in the boxing room. It is informal sports talk, easy to see, and a little colourful when it leaves the ring.
