1. 1

A one-stop shop is a shop — or a desk, or a website — where you can buy many different things, or get many different jobs done, without going to a second place. You stop once. That is the promise. You almost always hear the word glued to another word: one-stop shop, one-stop service, one-stop centre. People rarely say a one-stop alone. The whole idea grew out of one-stop shop and then spread: a clinic can offer one-stop care; a website can be a one-stop place for forms. It sounds like a sign in a window, because it often is. Not formal, not slang — the language of ads and public offices.
