On-the-spot means done at once, right there, at that place. An on-the-spot fine: the officer charges you now, on the street, not later by letter. An on-the-spot decision: you decide in that moment, without going away to think. An on-the-spot check: someone looks now, here. It comes from the phrase on the spot (at that exact place, or at that exact moment), written with so it can sit before a noun. Though actually, to put someone on the spot is a nearby phrase with a different job: it means to ask them a hard question in front of people, so they must answer with nowhere to hide.
on-the-spot 是當下就做、就在那個地點的意思。「an on-the-spot fine」指警察當場在路上開罰，而不是之後才寄信通知；「an on-the-spot decision」是當下就決定，不回去想；「an on-the-spot check」則是現場立刻檢查。這個詞來自片語「on the spot」，加上連字號後，才能放在名詞前面。附近還有一個片語「put someone on the spot」，意思是當眾問人一個很難的問題，讓對方無處可躲。
