If hair or clothes are ombré, the colour is not the same from top to bottom. It starts as one colour at the top and slowly becomes another colour at the bottom, with no hard line in the middle — a fade, like a shadow getting lighter. You hear it most in hair salons: dark near the head, lighter toward the ends, or the other way round. Fashion people use it for dresses and jumpers too. Though actually, shops sometimes stamp 'ombré' on a tag when the change is quite sudden, two blocks of colour side by side; the real idea is a soft slide from one colour into the next. The word still feels a bit fashion-y. In plain talk you can just say it fades from dark to light.
