An ollie is the jump and use to get the board off the ground without grabbing it. You push down hard on the tail — the back of the board — as you jump, and the board pops up and stays under your feet as you travel forward through the air. It is named after a real person: Alan Gelfand, a Florida born in 1963, whose nickname was Ollie. Skaters use it as a noun (“he did an ollie”) and as a verb (“she ollied the gap”). Among skate kids it is everyday speech; if you do not skate, you may never hear it. It is often the first “real” trick people learn, and a lot of other tricks are built on it.
