Oldsmobile was a kind of American car, made by the big company General Motors. For about a hundred years people in the US bought them, then the company stopped making new ones in 2004. The picture in many heads is a large, soft, heavy car for a long road — the sort a family, or an older driver, might have used. Though actually there were smaller Oldsmobiles too, not only the huge ones. You will not see the name on a new car now; you meet it on old cars, in films, and in talk about American car history. In the card game poker, some people also call a nine and an eight “Oldsmobile,” from a famous model called the Oldsmobile 98. That is a nickname from the car, not a second machine.
組成A blend of the name Olds and automobile. Named after Ransom E. Olds, who started a motor company in 1897. Early cars were sold as Olds automobiles; people ran those two words together as Oldsmobile, and the company soon used that name too.
