Old-growth describes forests (and sometimes other plant cover) that have been growing in the same place for a very long time, rather than trees people planted more recently. Many of the trees are old, the forest floor is rich, and the whole place has had years to become . People who cut trees may see it as wood to sell; people who care about wild places see it as something you cannot quickly replace. Though actually, old-growth is not a perfect scientific line — people argue about how old is old enough — but the everyday contrast is clear: this versus forest that was cut and then grew back, or trees planted in rows. You almost always see it before a noun: old-growth forest, old-growth trees.
