Oklahoma is a state in the central United States, on the Great Plains. It produces oil and grain. A large number of Native American people live there. In the 1930s its were part of the Dust Bowl: the land dried out, the wind blew the soil away, and many farming families had to leave. A lot of them went west to California to look for work. Though actually, Oklahoma is not only that hard chapter — people still farm and drill for oil there, and cities like Oklahoma City and are ordinary modern American cities. The nickname Okie started as a label for people from Oklahoma, especially those who left in the Dust Bowl years; it can sound rough or proud, depending on who says it.
