An okapi is a shy forest animal from central Africa, especially the rainforests of the Congo. It is related to the giraffe, though actually you would never guess that from far away: it has a much shorter neck, a dark reddish-brown body, and strong black-and-white stripes on its legs, which make some people think of a . It lives in thick forest, eats leaves, and is hard to see. Zoos sometimes keep okapis. It is not a mix of giraffe and ; it is its own animal, closer to the giraffe.

A ruminant (Okapia johnstoni) found in the rainforests of the Congo, related to the giraffe but with a much shorter neck, a reddish-brown coat, and zebra-like stripes on the hindquarters.

They are boldly marked, however, with purple-black stripes and splodges, which give that zebra-like appearance to the limbs of the Okapi that caused the first imperfect account of it to indicate the discovery of a new striped horse.
