An oilman is a man who owns an oil company or works in the oil business. In American English especially, it often paints a picture of a rich owner — the Texas oilman with land and wells — not the person who tightens bolts on a rig. Those workers have other names. The -man ending makes the word feel a bit old, and it assumes a man. People still say it in news and stories. Oilwoman is possible but rare; more often you will hear oil executive, or someone in the oil industry. Though actually, not every oilman is wealthy; the tidy picture in films is tidier than the real mix of owners, traders, and office staff.
