If something catches you off-guard, it happens when you are not ready for it. You were not watching for it, so it surprises you — sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. It is almost always used with catch or take: catch someone off-guard, take someone off-guard. The thing that catches you can be a question, a piece of news, or a sudden event. Everyday English, a bit more at home in writing, but people do say it. The picture behind it is a guard who has away: for a moment, nobody is watching.
off-guard 表示事先沒有準備，所以被突然的事情嚇到或驚訝。它幾乎都和 catch 或 take 連用，例如「catch someone off-guard」或「take someone off-guard」。讓人措手不及的可以是問題、消息或突發事件。這是日常用語，寫作中也很常見。它的畫面是守衛暫時走開，沒有人在守著。
