    If something catches you off-guard, it happens when you are not ready for it. You were not watching for it, so it surprises you — sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. It is almost always used with catch or take: catch someone off-guard, take someone off-guard. The thing that catches you can be a question, a piece of news, or a sudden event. Everyday English, a bit more at home in writing, but people do say it. The picture behind it is a guard who has away: for a moment, nobody is watching.
