The Oxford English Dictionary: a huge historical dictionary of English. It does not only tell you what a word means now. It tries to show the life of the word — early uses, how the meaning changed, and real sentences from books across hundreds of years. People who study English treat it as the big record, not as a pocket book for class. In speech they say “the O-E-D.” Oxford also publishes many smaller dictionaries; those are not the OED, even when they have “Oxford” on the cover.
