Odin is the chief god in the old stories of the North — the tales we now call Norse mythology, from places like Norway, Iceland, and Sweden. People told that he made the world, and that he was a god of war and of wisdom too. He is not a gentle grandfather. In the stories he is clever, hungry to know things, and often walks in disguise. German stories call him ; the old English stories call him . That English name is why Wednesday looks the way it does: it was once ’s day. He belongs to myth, and to modern books and games that borrow those myths. He is not a god people in Taiwan pray to.
組成English took the name as a learned borrowing from Old Norse Óðinn (Icelandic still has Óðinn). It is the same name as Old High German Wodan and Old English Wōden. All come from Proto-Germanic *Wōdanaz, from *wōdaz, “rage” or the wild fire in the mind that also makes poetry. That goes back to Proto-Indo-European *weh₂t-, “to be excited”. The old English word wode, “mad, frantic”, is related. Woden and Wotan are doublets of Odin — the same name by different roads. Scholars also compare Latin vātēs (a poet-seer) and Irish fáidh.
