組成English took the name as a learned borrowing from Old Norse Óðinn (Icelandic still has Óðinn). It is the same name as Old High German Wodan and Old English Wōden. All come from Proto-Germanic *Wōdanaz, from *wōdaz, “rage” or the wild fire in the mind that also makes poetry. That goes back to Proto-Indo-European *weh₂t-, “to be excited”. The old English word wode, “mad, frantic”, is related. Woden and Wotan are doublets of Odin — the same name by different roads. Scholars also compare Latin vātēs (a poet-seer) and Irish fáidh.
