An odalisque was a woman held as a slave in a rich household in the old Ottoman world, often in the private rooms of a palace. European painters later fell in love with the word: they used it for pictures of a woman lying on cushions, looking beautiful and still. So the word has two flavours. In history it names a servant-slave of that time and place. In art it names a kind of picture, and that picture often makes the life look softer and more romantic than it really was. It is a word now. You will meet it in museums and art classes, not in the street. It is not a kind word to use about a living person.

組成English borrowed the word from French odalisque. French took it from Ottoman Turkish odalık, a chambermaid — someone who served in a room. That comes from oda, “room”.
