In Australia and New Zealand, an ocker is not simply “an Australian man.” It is a type: a rough, loud, no-fuss Australian bloke, the kind of figure people link with beer, sport, and speech that is very local. It can be an adjective too: ocker humour, ocker culture. Friends may use it with a grin; from the outside it can sound like a put-down. It is strongly informal, and people outside Australia and New Zealand rarely need it. Though actually, dictionaries sometimes list another, much older English word ocker (also spelled oker) that meant charging extra interest on a loan. That is a different word that only looks the same; nobody in a pub in Melbourne means usury when they say ocker.
